Hardwood & Softwood Lumber Markets

Hardwood Lumber Market

NEW HARDWOOD

Winter Storm Fern disrupted operations during the last week of January, impacting regions from the Northeast through the southern Mid-Atlantic and into parts of the South. Ice, snow, and extreme wind chills limited employee travel and log truck deliveries, affecting both pallet manufacturers and sawmills.

Beyond travel challenges, frigid conditions slow production — equipment runs less efficiently, heat-treating cycles are extended, and safety remains a top priority. We remain hopeful that the balance of winter brings more stable operating conditions.

On the hardwood side, new lumber markets continue to face headwinds. Demand remains soft, and many mills are holding logs without steady movement. Several regions are reporting mill and pallet shop closures, which could increase pricing pressure on cants as supply tightens.

Price increases have already surfaced in some areas, with others expected to follow. As always, the market remains fluid, and we will continue monitoring developments closely.

We value our partnership and welcome the opportunity to discuss how these trends may impact your program.

Softwood Lumber Market

SOFT LUMBER / NEW PINE MARKET

Softwood markets across the U.S. and Canada have shifted upward in recent weeks. Buyers are reporting increases across both Southern Yellow Pine (SYP) and SPF, driven by supply constraints and extended mill order files.

Some regions are seeing increases of up to 25% on #2 & Better material. Economy-grade availability has tightened, and low-grade pricing continues to strengthen amid constrained supply. These trends are expected to remain impactful as we move into March.

In response, some pallet manufacturers are limiting purchases to essential replenishment, while others anticipate pine pallet pricing adjustments to offset rising lumber costs.

Ongoing U.S.–Canada trade discussions add another layer of uncertainty. While potential tariff measures have made headlines, we remain hopeful that negotiations will evolve in a way that minimizes cross-border disruption.

We will continue monitoring developments closely and welcome the opportunity to discuss how these trends may impact your program.

Recycled Pallet Market

RECYCLED PALLET MARKET

The recycled pallet segment may see notable pricing movement in 2026, particularly across AAA, A, and B grades. Ongoing mill closures, rising labor costs, and broader economic softness are creating upward pressure in some regions.

That said, several macroeconomic indicators point to potential stabilization. Fiscal stimulus, moderating energy costs, improved tariff clarity, and resilient consumer spending could provide tailwinds. Online holiday sales reached a record $257.8 billion, up 6.8% year over year, signaling continued goods demand.

However, the expected post-holiday “core flush” has been limited. Leaner inventory strategies and improved pallet recovery practices have reduced excess core returns. If tighter core availability persists through Q1, additional upward pricing pressure could follow.
